What is a smudge pot?
Traditionally smudge pots were used in orchards and vineyards to prevent frost damage. They did this by burning oil, diesel or kerosene and were positioned throughout the are wanting to be protected. In a modern backyard setting, smudge pots not only add heat, but also ambient lighting and can serve as unique focal point in an outdoor setting.
What fuel can I use?
Diesel fuel: This is one of the most common fuels for smudge pots. It burns relatively cleanly and is readily available.
Fuel oil (like No. 2 heating oil): This is another option, often used in larger smudge pots. It burns similarly to diesel, but it can be a little cheaper depending on the region.
Kerosene: While kerosene can produce a cleaner burn than diesel or fuel oil and is commonly used in smudge pots for its ability to provide consistent flame and heat.
Other types of oils can be used such as used ,motor oil or cooking oil, but these oils will produce heavy smoke, and not ideal for a backyard situation.
